We have a Slab!

We were not expecting our slab to be poured to the end of next week. Wisdom surprised us by getting in poured on Saturday. We were a little concerned as the temperature got to around 42 degrees on Saturday. The concreting team started early at around 7am - when the temperature was a nice 25 degrees. By 12pm they had they had the slab poured and were in the process of finishing - the temp was around 36 degrees at this time - but luckily it was somewhat cloudy and did not receive the full punishment of direct sunlight. They had completed by around 2:30pm - and at this time the temp hit 42 degrees and the sun came out. We were very worried that our slab would dry out way to quick - but luckily, a big southerly came through at 4:30pm along with some very light showers. The temperature has remained a fairly constant 22-27 degrees since this time which is almost ideal for the curing process. Our Site Supervisor (F) has informed us that drainage is scheduled for the 2nd February and framing is due to start on the 4th! Some pictures of the slab below.

  1. We've been following your blog as we are also looking to build a Wisdom Manhattan in WPH. Can I be cheeky and ask what it is costing you to build, approximately. I've been led to believe that you need to add about 50% on top of the guide price in the brochure. Thanks and best of luck with your building.

  2. Hi Anonymous,
For our build, we basically made just about every upgrade under the sun. Stone bench tops in kitchen & bathrooms, poly cupboards, ducted air (with individual zones and controllers for most rooms), ducted vacuum. We added a 3rd garage, added a balcony, extended the whole house by 800mm, made entire house brick, made bed 3 wider and longer, added spa bath, frameless showerscreen to all ensuites, upgraded toilets, added 50 donlights....I could go on but you get the drift. And yes, by the time we added all these, the cost was approx 50% higher than the standard cost. We could have held back on lots of these upgrades and perhaps only added 10-20% to build cost - but we figured we might as well get everything we want and hope that the bank agreed to front up the cash....

  3. hi

we are also eagerly following your blog as we are still in the early stages of a Manhattan 42. Your house will certainly be AWESOME :) by the time it is finished. unfortunately our Manhattan won't be as awesome as yours : ( but still awesome none the less.
question for you re hot water system, we have been told that due to the size of the Manhattan ensuites etc that we will need 2 hot water systems, is that the case for you as well.
    thanks

ps anonymous definitely add at least 50% to the base price then you will have a more accurate picture of what it will cost.

    good luck : )

  4. Hi Peter,

The Manhattan certainly is a nice design. I am sure your house will be awesome. We are very much looking forward to Wisdom's display Manhattan which is being build in Oran Park (due for completion in March I think).

Regarding the hot water system - are you having gas or solar? We were not able to get gas and consequently had to upgrade to solar (only one system). From memory the upgrade cost was a few thousand dollars.

  5. Hey hills_builder

From what i have been told, Wisdom's Manhattan display at Oran Park will be open week 3 of March, certainly looking forward to it.

Re hot water system, we also don't have gas available, we have been tendered for 2 electric hot water systems, but want solar electric boosted hot water system due to its energy efficiency and potential $$$ savings.
    Still awaiting prices.

We have been told that due to the number of wet area's that we need 2 hot water systems (double the $$$$ of course) don't really understand why as all the showers will never be running at the same time and our current house only has 1 hot water system which does just fine on its own.

I find it interesting that you have not been told the same and only need 1 hot water system, so i will certainly be questioning the reasoning behind their decision.

    thanks for the reply

looking forward to your next update

    regards

    Peter
